The Cowgirls Guide to Beautiful Skin

Mature and Sun-Damage Skin

How to keep your Cowgirl Glow!

Aging is inevitable and most Cowgirls find it hard to hide from the sun so, at one point, we’re looking in the mirror at a drier, thinner more blotchy skin. Something happened to the soft, vital smooth skin of our youth. So many rodeos, so many cowboys, too many trail rides down that dusty road of life!

Let’s take a look at what happened…

Both chronological and photo-aging (sun exposure) have many of the same effects on our skin. As our bodies age, skin becomes thinner as elastin breaks down and collagen production decreases. We produce fewer cells and damaged ones are repaired and replaced less quickly. The outer layers of the skin become thinner, cells elongate and flatten and are less able to retain moisture. We lose the fatty layer under the skin and our sebaceous glands secrete less oil. It’s a vicious cycle - less oil, less moisture, dryer skin, more fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

One thing that never fades is a strong Cowgirl spirit, our zest for life, our happiness with ourselves and those we love. We know that beauty is all about a healthy, vibrant and full life. Don’t forget we earn the beautiful faces we have later in life; hopefully full of lines from laughing, loving and riding life hard.
Stand up straight and smile often—that takes five years off of anyone’s face!

. . and what a gal can do to get back her glow!

The two aims of mature and sun-damaged skin maintenance are; cell regeneration and moisture retention. By speeding the rate of cell renewal through exfoliation, skin appears fresh, healthier and younger. By feeding skin the food; vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive, it retains moisture better so fine lines diminish, dryness is balanced and skin is more supple, vital and youthful looking.

How you care for your overall health is greatly reflected on the skin. Skin is nourished through the tiny capillaries that bring blood into the tissue. And our blood is nourished by the foods we eat. Our bodies love a balanced diet of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and protein. This is not the time to eliminate fat. Good essential fatty acids from olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds sustain cell activity and strengthen the cell walls to maintain moisture retention. Drink lots of water and let up on alcohol (you’re not still smoking) and keep moving!
