Cowgirl's Guide to Beautiful Skin

Why Choose Natural

Phyto aromatherapeutic ingredients feed your skin

What does “natural” mean in a skin care product?

The definition of “natural” as used in skin care is; any substance found in nature or obtained from renewable sources such as fruits, plants, vegetables or minerals without physical or chemical degradation or enhancement. Product formulation that are based on the timeless elements of nature and contain only botanical ingredients nourish your skin with vitamins and nutrients that occur in their whole plant state.

What’s so bad about synthetic ingredients?

“There are several hundred synthetic ingredients that are suspected as cancer causing substances and are still used in most over the counter cosmetics. Most of the 5,000-7,000 chemicals permitted for use in cosmetic products were only invented during the past 100 years.” says Jurgen Klein, cosmetic formulator and expert. “Yet, the herbs, vegetables, essential oils and flowers used in many eco-friendly companies have stood the test of time and have been proven effective and safe through centuries of use in the traditional medicines and foods in the East and West.”

Many of the ingredients commonly found in mainstream skin care products come from the same manufacturers that make household cleaners, insecticides and motor oils. Synthetic colors, perfumes and preservatives are the most common irritants to skin. Many of the rashes, allergic outbreaks, and skin discomforts like itching, dryness and swelling can be attributed to the chemicals in daily household cleansers and skin care products.

How would a customer know if there are botanical ingredients in a product?

Read the label! Most of the ingredients should have plant-like names. If you are reading a string of chemical sounding names, don’t buy it! Many products make a claim to be natural, even though only a tiny percentage of the overall formulation may come from truly natural ingredients. In fact most often, those small percentages of active ingredients are negated by the chemicals in the formulation. To really make a difference, you want products with high concentrations of therapeutic elements, not just a drop or two.

At Cowgirl, we use whole plant ingredients, never synthesized or isolated constituents. Flowers, leaves, stems roots and seeds provide antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids -the complete nourishment our body and skin utilize and assimilate for healthy cells and tissue.

When you put chemicals and synthetic ingredients on your skin, your body has to work hard to break them down to absorb them. Your skin represents your body’s first line of defense against these unwanted items so don’t make it even harder! You eat fresh nourishing food so think of skincare products as food too. Be sure they are fresh enough for your skin to eat!

Why desert botanicals?

Desert botanicals have triumphed over harsh environmental conditions like relentless sun and wind, lack of water and extreme temperature changes. These plants have thrived because of their own constituents that retain moisture and nutrients. These very ingredients help to heal, nourish and protect our skin that can be so vulnerable to environmental influences, both indoors and outdoors.

Succulent plants like aloe vera exist only in desert climates. It has a gel like pulp rich in nutrients known for its ability to close and heal wounds. Aloe Vera has an ancient history with native people worldwide and is known as the medicine or first aid plant. We just know that cowgirls would have a leaf in their back pockets at all times. Jojoba is native to the deserts of the Southwest. This natural wax covers the pores of the plant in order to prevent moisture loss, much like our own skin’s natural sebum does. It binds water in the skin, both moisturizing and protecting against dehydration. Jojoba is light, penetrates easily and yet won’t clog pores, even on people with oily skin. Horsetail, also known as bottlebrush, is one of the oldest surviving plants on the planet. It is rich in sulfur and silica, two ingredients known to feed and improve the skin. Horsetail promotes blood flow to the dermis, where healing takes place. These ingredients plus yucca, sage, sunflower and juniper are infused in our products to give Cowgirl Skin Care its unique desert blend. These, like all of our ingredients work hard for your skin…naturally!
